Entrepreneur Showcase: How Lynn Started Her Tea Business
I wanted to showcase an entrepreneur today I met almost a year ago here at Plan to Start, that has a really amazing story of how she founded her company: a tea product for women. She became a fan of our blogs, and started reading them constantly. She reached out to me with some business problems she was having. Over the past year, she’s continued to contact me. I was really happy when I saw some of the progress she’s made receiving this email:
“Amanda- I think I finally just stepped into my ‘President’ shoes and took control where it needed to be. I finally figured out that I actually run my own company and am allowed to make actual decisions, and it was a pretty cool revelation. Believe me, I really think I hadn’t quite grasped that reality yet. I also learned how to let go and allow the people that I entrusted to work with me do what they do best. It’s a delicate balance. Grasping the ‘being in control but not controlling’ thing.”
Lynn’s Big Tea Idea
Her name is Lynn Higgin. Her business: Crazy Bitch Tea. A brand that has started to become really popular among younger and older women. Lynn’s formula is specifically made to calm some…let’s say…emotional craziness…many people experience during certain points in their lives. What I found really surprising about her company, was half of Lynn’s customers are men that actually buy the tea.
Lynn started as a Clinical Herbalist and Wholistic Kinesiologist who’s family and friends starting coming to her, looking for a natural solution to calm the emotions. She came up with this tea blend for them, and they kept coming back for more. Finally, Lynn decided to turn this talent into a product…and so the journey began.
Lynn started testing her product at home, then moved into production at the local brewery. Above all else, she’s persistent. Truly dedicated to her business. She’s been through people issues, legal issues, financial issues, marketing issues, every possible scenario you can imagine the past year. I’ve watched her fight her way into stores to get them to sell her product. Getting turned down, banging her head into a wall, but she never gave up. I remember telling her one day “you were meant to do this”. She really is. This company, this is her gift. This is her talent.
During her journey, she quietly read here at Plan to Start. “I always felt like your articles were speaking directly to me”, she tells me. “I’m good with the way things are progressing, and I am learning patience. And faith…lots of faith!”
Things Start Looking Up
Not only has Lynn now started to fill her “president shoes”, but the tea business is looking forward to being featured in an upcoming issue of Tea Mag, a global magazine. They’ll also be attending the Tea Expo in June. A few stores have recently signed on the product, and Lynn hopes to start pounding the pavement pitching her tea to larger companies & chains; next to her co-founder Robin.
Lynn’s Lessons for Others
The lessons others can learn from Lynn’s tea business? “What I’ve learned, is that I need to follow my gut all the way, and bring in the people that did feel right..in my gut. I don’t think I would have gotten this far if I hadn’t followed my instincts, and listened to people who were trying to tell me what I should be doing, or where I should sell my tea. I have known from the beginning that my tea, and brand (and all of us involved) were special, and we were going to make it.”
